Iltizam Relief Society Water Well Projects in Rural Malaysia

Iltizam Relief Society (ILTIZAM) focuses its water well projects in rural and remote areas of Sabah, Malaysia. So far, we have completed 9 projects, with 8 of them built on 4 remote islands and one water well in a rural village.

Why were only nine water wells so far?

Officially, many districts in Sabah state are the poorest districts in Malaysia, and despite Malaysia already attaining independence for 65 years, many rural villages here are not accessible except with 4x4 vehicles or by boat due to its geographical challenges.

Therefore, building a water well will be extremely costly and only a handful of contractors are willing to undertake the work due to challenging logistics in rural Sabah.

And the cost will increase if the water wells are built on an island off the coast of Sabah.

And the water well that we build in Sabah is not only a water well, it will also include a water tank, a water tower and is equipped with a diesel / petrol engine water pump. The water well area is also being fenced and the well is also covered with a concrete top to prevent children from falling into it or from being polluted.

The water well project in Sabah will provide clean water for up to a maximum of 100 families in a village.

Our focus is more on remote islands because it is very unlikely they will get tap water from the government. Therefore, this water well will provide benefits for a very long time.

Many of these remote islands are currently only relying on rainwater harvesting for clean water. When there is no rain, especially during the hot season, they will have a water crisis.

ILTIZAM’s water well project will also benefit the village’s or island’s mosque and schools, if any, which are also sourcing clean water from rainwater harvesting.

Give water! This is one of the best forms of charity!

Giving clean water is a form of Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). It will not only benefit the poor villagers in this life but also benefit the donors in the next life for as long as this water well is being used.

On the authority of Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Umm (the mother of) Sa’d has died, so which charity is best?” He (blessings and peace be upon him) replied, “Water (is best).” He said, “So he dug a well and said, “This (well) is for Umm Sa’d’” (Narrated Abu Dawud)

We, Iltizam Relief Society (formerly known as Al-I’tisam Relief Program Association), is a registered NGO, based in Malaysia. We have been working in the humanitarian mission as far back as 2013, providing aid, necessary living spaces, clean water projects, and food to targeted families and individuals in order to spread the message of a United Ummah. We believe that by being on the ground and interacting with these individuals, we can understand, share and relieve their pain, one family at a time. However, we cannot do this alone. Despite our individual problems and concerns, we can alleviate the pain and suffering of the Ummah around the world by simply donating a small sum towards the cause of a United Ummah.
