Gaza Municipality faces major challenges due to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, but it works hard to provide basic services and enhance the quality of life for citizens. The municipality seeks to continuously improve the infrastructure, focusing its efforts on renovating streets and expanding the water and sewage network, despite the difficulties it faces. Waste management is also a major challenge, so the municipality is making strenuous efforts to reduce pollution and improve the local environment in Gaza City.
Gaza Municipality partners with many NGOs and charitable institutions to enhance social care, education and health services, providing humanitarian assistance to affected populations.
The municipality also does not neglect the importance of community participation, as it encourages citizens to participate in decision-making through workshops and surveys, which enhances transparency and gives the community a voice in determining its priorities.
About Gaza Municipality and its role in improving the conditions of the population in the Strip
Gaza Municipality was established in 1893, and its first mayor was Hajj Mustafa Al-Alami and the last mayor in the Ottoman era was Mr. Saeed Al-Shawa, who completed the municipal hospital. After the return of the Palestinian Authority, the late President Yasser Arafat issued a decision to form a new municipal council headed by Aoun Saadi Al-Shawa, to be the first municipal council under the Palestinian Authority, aiming to improve infrastructure and services.
As for the current municipal council of Gaza Municipality, the council took over the management of Gaza Municipality in August 2019. The council includes 10 members with advanced degrees in various specializations, and they seek to improve the reality of the city.
The current mayor of the municipality is: Prof. Dr. Yahya Rushdi Al-Sarraj.
Gaza Municipality continued to provide basic services to citizens despite the difficult circumstances, high risk and limited capabilities, as the municipality's emergency committee works to focus on four main priorities, which are: water, sanitation, waste collection, and opening streets, as part of its efforts to improve people's lives in the city.
Thanks to the work of the Emergency Committee, the municipality enhances the response to the needs of the population, such as improving living conditions, which reflects the will of the community to face challenges and withstand crises.
Joint achievements of the Gaza Municipality with the Ensany Platform
The cooperation between the Ensany Global and the Gaza Municipality took place through a campaign launched by the Ensany Global Platform called "Life for Gaza" to support the municipality's projects, and many joint achievements were achieved that contributed to improving the living and environmental conditions of the residents of the Strip.
This cooperation reflected the spirit of solidarity with the people of Gaza, and highlighted the importance of partnerships in overcoming ongoing crises.
The following are some of the achievements made in the joint campaign "Life for Gaza":
- Water Supply Project:
The problem of scarcity of clean water in Gaza is one of the biggest challenges, as a large number of residents rely on unsafe water sources. Ensany Global provided a safe environment for donations, through which it provided the opportunity for the Gaza Municipality to implement the "Water Supply" project, which provided clean drinking water to thousands of families.
- Maintenance of sewage lines:
Gaza faces major challenges in managing sewage networks due to dilapidated infrastructure and lack of funding. Ensany Global helped the Gaza Municipality implement projects to maintain and expand sewage networks in several neighborhoods. Damaged lines were also repaired and sewage networks were improved, which helped reduce flooding and health problems caused by leaking contaminated water.
- Opening streets and removing rubble and waste:
Waste and rubble have accumulated in many areas of Gaza due to the war and continuous bombing, which has hindered movement and negatively affected the environment and public health. Thanks to the support provided by donors through the Life for Gaza campaign, the Gaza Municipality was able to implement intensive campaigns to remove accumulated rubble and waste.
Through this cooperation, the Gaza Municipality and Ensany Global succeeded in raising awareness about the difficult conditions experienced by the residents of the Strip. Charitable campaigns and donations were also organized. This cooperation led to the involvement of the international community in improving the lives of local residents, and became a model for how to confront humanitarian crises through partnerships.
How much money did the Gaza Municipality raise in cooperation with the Ensany Global?
The Gaza Municipality, in cooperation with the Ensany Global achieved success in the joint campaign, the Life for Gaza campaign, as the value of donations reached about $670,000 for the benefit of the various municipality projects that serve our people in the Strip. We mention some of them:
- Water supply.
- Maintenance of sewage lines.
- Opening streets by removing stuck rubble and waste that has accumulated for months.
Thus, the Ensany Global was able to provide a safe environment for donations for the benefit of the municipality's projects that serve the interests of the residents. Through this cooperation, the spirit of cooperation with the people of the Strip was strengthened, emphasizing the importance of partnerships in improving living and environmental conditions.
The cooperation between the Gaza Municipality and the Ensany Global within the "Call of Life for Gaza" campaign showed how humanitarian partnerships can achieve tangible and effective results under difficult circumstances.
The role of charitable institutions in solidarity and cooperation to support humanitarian issues
Charitable institutions play a major role in promoting solidarity and cooperation to support humanitarian issues, especially in times that require a rapid and coordinated response to crises.
We will mention a simple explanation of the role of these charitable institutions:
- Providing financial support and basic resources:
Charitable institutions collect donations from individuals and institutions around the world to support humanitarian issues, such as providing food, water, shelter, and medical services to those in need.
These donations enable them to provide urgent assistance in disaster or crisis areas, and through extensive networks of donors and partners, these institutions can provide rapid financial support that contributes to saving lives and improving the living conditions of those affected.
- Promoting global awareness of humanitarian issues:
One of the most important roles of charitable institutions is to spread awareness about Ensany Global issues, such as poverty, famine, wars, and health crises. Through media and awareness campaigns, it highlights the suffering of marginalized groups and urges individuals and communities to provide support. This awareness contributes to enhancing the sense of global solidarity with those affected, and increases the volume of donations and moral support directed to them.
- Providing psychological and social support:
In addition to material assistance, charitable organizations provide psychological and social support to those affected by crises and disasters. This support includes providing psychological care to children suffering from the trauma of wars or natural disasters, and organizing training and rehabilitation programs that help families recover and restore their normal lives.
Thus, charitable organizations are considered a fundamental pillar in supporting humanitarian issues and enhancing solidarity and cohesion among communities around the world.
Ensany Global focuses its efforts on spreading awareness about these issues and shedding light on them to provide the necessary support and stand by the vulnerable.
